Push and Pull Factors of Population

These factors explain why people migrate from one place to another:

1. Push Factors

Definition:

Push factors are conditions or situations that drive people away from their current location. They typically involve negative aspects or hardships that make living in a place undesirable.

Examples:

Economic Hardship: Lack of job opportunities or poor economic conditions.

Political Instability: Conflict, war, or persecution.

Environmental Degradation: Natural disasters or poor environmental conditions.

Lack of Services: Insufficient healthcare, education, or infrastructure.

2. Pull Factors

Definition

Pull factors are conditions or attractions that draw people toward a new location. They represent positive aspects or benefits of a place that make it appealing.

Examples:

Better Job Opportunities: Higher employment prospects or better wages.

Political Stability: Safer and more stable political environments.

Better Living Conditions: Higher quality of life, better healthcare, and education.

Cultural Attractions: A more desirable lifestyle or culture

Factors that affect population size and growth

Readers question: Explain the main factors which affect

population size and growth?

Population growth is determined by fertility rates (the number of children per adult) –  fatality rates. Birth rates and mortality rates are, in turn, determined by a combination of factors. Often economic growth and economic development have led to a decline in population growth, but there are no hard and fast rules and other factors, such as availability of family planning, social expectations and government intervention can play an important role.
